Haemieupseong Walled Town: A Journey Through Time > Places

Haemieupseong Walled Town, built as a military headquarters during the early Joseon Dynasty, stands as the best-preserved fortress from that era built on flat ground. The site has significant historical value, with Admiral Yi Sun-sin serving as a military officer here in 1579. It also bears a tragic history as a site of Catholic persecution during the late Joseon Dynasty, which was commemorated by Pope Francis during his visit in August 2014.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of the Joseon Dynasty during the Seosan Haemieupseong Festival, held annually around October. This event vividly recreates the atmosphere of the time, offering a unique cultural experience.
