 > If you are familiar with South Korea, wildfires are an unheard-of phenomenon. Beginning on March 21, 2025, South Korea experienced its worst wildfire disaster in history, with fires commencing in Sancheong County and advancing to Uiseong County, located in the southeastern area. The synergy of intense winds coupled with dry weather conditions led the fires to spread quickly, culminating in tragic outcomes.

> As a result, at least 27 innocent lives were lost, including three firefighters and one government employee. Also, tens of thousands of residents were displaced, hundreds of buildings have been reduced to rubble, and tens of thousands of forest hectares have been affected.

> The wildfires endangered both modern infrastructure and some of the country’s cherished cultural landmarks. Among the at-risk locations was the Hahoe Folk Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its historic wooden homes, traditional thatched-roofs, and archaic shrines. Such dry weather conditions underscores the unprecedented climate crisis that our world is encountering. It should be noted that apparently the impacted regions have had only half of the usual rainfall this season.

> It is essential to express gratitude to the heroic firefighters who worked under precarious situations amid rapidly advancing flames and volatile winds. More than 120 helicopters, along with thousands of personnel, have been mobilized to battle the wildfires.
